Facing A Utility Shut-Off

Housing · Better Living Assistance Help Centre

A shut-off notice has its own timeline, separate from your rent. Act on it as soon as it arrives.

Steps

  1. Call the utility first. Ask for the exact shut-off date, the minimum payment to stop it, and whether they offer a deferred payment plan or budget billing. Ask them to note the account.
  2. Ask about medical or life-support protections if someone in the home depends on powered equipment.
  3. Dial 2-1-1 for Heart of Florida United Way, which keeps the current list of utility assistance funds in Central Florida.
  4. Send us the basic needs form and tick “Help with a utility bill”.

What helps your case

Have your account number, the shut-off notice, and the last two bills to hand. Most funds pay the utility directly, not you, so they need the account details.
